Public Hearing

August 30, 2001

10:00 a.m.

 

Chairman Oglesby opened the Public Hearing on the possible FY'02 Tax Increase at 10:00 a.m. In attendance were Commissioners Brown, Burdick, Banister, Dorsey and Oglesby. Also attending were Gary Cobb, Nathan Golden (Anderson Independent), Selma Cheely, Bob Smith, Phil Hix, Mike Cleveland and Bill Holland. There were approximately eleven citizens attending not employed by the county.

 

The County Administrator spoke first and presented a brief background of where the budget process was currently at. The proposed millage rate of 6.34 that was published on August 22, 2001 has been reduced to 6.12 after a recent Budget Work Session. A brief description of the major budget item affecting the proposed millage increase was presented.

 

Chairman Oglesby next called upon all the Constitutional Officers to briefly discuss their budgets. Mr. Holland asked the Board to reconsider including job grade increases for his employees.

 

Jack Edmunds, Chairman of the Joint Development Authority spoke concerning their activity in the county. He stated they were focused on developing the Gateway Park.

 

The floor was then opened to citizen input.

 

One citizen inquired why were cell drains left out of the Jail construction/ His point being architects and contractors should do things right the first time and the county should insure that this happens.

 

Trenten Parker read a prepared paper that he earlier distributed to those present.

 

Virgil Ayers complemented the good job the county department heads does. He asked when is the county going to stop increasing taxes.

 

The Chairman asked that the County Administrator review the capital budget requests and personnel change requests.

 

Other citizens who spoke asked that the Board not raise taxes. There were no specific suggestions as to where to cut expenses or increase revenues.

 

Chairman Oglesby adjourned the meeting at 11:45 a.m.
